ACHIEVERS GHANA COVID-19 RESPONSE INITIATIVE

The COVID-19 global pandemic presents an unprecedented challenge to countries around the world. In a span of six months, millions are infected and over 712,236 deaths recorded worldwide, the coronavirus is a pandemic on a scale not seen since the Spanish Influenza of 1918.

The recorded cases in Ghana have spiked drastically, as at 6th August, the World Health Organization has recorded 39,642 confirmed cases and 199 deaths related to Coronavirus. Ghana’s contained spread has largely been down to the swift action of the government through lockdown of borders, quick dissemination of social distancing and good hygiene practices.

It is imperative Ghana does not rest on its laurels and stays ahead of the curve. Government, non-governmental organisations and citizens must all come together to ensure every single member of our society is ready and well equipped to protect themselves against this common enemy.

Achievers Ghana is playing its part to ensure residents within underserved communities in Greater Accra, Eastern Region and Ashanti Region get the attention they deserve. Our COVID-19 Response Initiative is configured to ensure community readiness in the face of the coronavirus with a 4 – pronged approach:

1. Community Sensitisation (in local languages)

The objective of this project is to ensure the vulnerable residents of Accra are well informed on COVID-19 preventive measures. Through this sensitisation we aim to flatten the curve in underserved areas. Through this project, community members will make informed decisions pertaining to their health.

2. Childhood literacy

With the disruption of all activity including the closure of schools it is imperative our pupils are engaged while at home. United Way Ghana is thus providing educational materials uniquely tailored towards educating pupils on COVID-19 prevention but also making sure they have ample material to keep them engaged academically.

3. Donation of personal protective equipment (PPE)

Providing vulnerable households and community clinics with PPEs which include face masks, soaps and hand sanitisers. These beneficiary households are identified as having little to no resources to protect their families during this period. With our intervention, many households will be able to protect their children and also preserve their careers by staying healthy.

We also aim at supporting the efforts of the local clinics by providing them with PPEs to keep our frontline workers in underserved communities protected from any potential exposure.

4. Donation of relief packages

There are parents and caregivers in some communities dependent on the school feeding program to provide their children with nutritious meals. However with schools closed and their meager salaries, they are unable to provide adequately for all their dependants. This donation provides them with relief packages containing food items such as gari, rice, milk, etc. to tide them during these challenging times.

OUR PARTNERS ARE

Our goal is simple. Reach as many households, in as many communities as possible. Through partnership with local and international community organizers we are ready to act. Yet, we cannot do this without you. Partner with us today by donating money or in-kind. Your money will go a long way towards supporting a marginalised individual or household and children in need during this time of great upheaval.
